JEE: Competition or Future

Joint Entrance Examination, commonly known as JEE is an Indian competitive exam held every year for students to get into top engineering institutes of India that are Indian Institute of Technology(IIT), Indian Institutes of Information Technology(IIIT) and National Institute of Technology(NIT). JEE comprises of two examinations that are JEE Main and JEE Advanced. One first gives JEE Main and if he/she is qualified, he/she gets to give JEE Advanced. Both exams are typically difficult and are designed to test the thorough knowledge of the student in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

After result both exams give out their rank and marks lists which further decide the branch and
institution of the student. From JEE Main students get NITs or IIITs and from JEE Advanced they get IITs. There are around 16 IITs and 31 NITs. Every year about 1 to 1.2 million students register for the exam and out of these about top 20000 students get their desired institute and desired branches.

Son/Daughter: Yeah, mathematics and science. Sure.... (what can I say)

Above given is nowadays a usual conversation that happens with a child who completes his tenth standard with good marks. Before even hearing out what the child has to say, he/she is laden with the load of engineering.

Everybody has made a stone view that IIT is destination of a student who has passed tenth with fair marks and after getting in IIT, 2Cr+ package is. The society and parents nowadays play a more important role in deciding the future of the students rather than they themselves.

Students do a lot of labor and with their persistence, intelligence and diligence work out their way to get great marks in JEE. In two years they practice questions, strengthen concepts, build tricks and do whatever they can to be better in their exams.

Mostly everyone desires to get computer science at top IITs, IIITs or NITs. They are pressurized by the thought process of the society that 2crore+ package is the ultimate destination or goal of life. Money crushes the interests and other things. JEE is regarded as one of the most competitive and tough exams in the world.

The topper of both JEE Main and JEE Advanced are given celebrity like status by media and the institute they have studied from. Coaching institutes are earning millions every year making profit and business out of the preparation and study for JEE.

Parents pay Lakhs of money per year for their children to study at best institute they can get or afford and get IIT. Media and society has hyped IITs and NITs so much that engineering has become the only career available after medical for students in the minds of parents.

Students who crack it are given immense amount of respect and who couldn't are treated like dumbs. Such a stiff competition and tough paper is bound to offer failure to many students in the exam, but it doesn't mean that it is the end of the world. Circumstances and luck also plays its part in such situations and so nobody is really to be blamed for this.

Because of this many students go into depression, commit suicide and what not just for sake of an exam. Such important has this exam become in our society. We must all understand JEE is an exam and not the future of the life of the students. A single piece of paper can not decide the future of anyone.

Is it really that important? Is money and IIT more important than happiness of your child? Is engineering the only option and talent or interest are nothing? Is IIT the end of everything?
These are the questions churning in the minds of thousands of students in India and nobody is answering them and they are also not able to answer these for themselves.

Parents have become habitual to think that engineering and medical are the only careers in the world that can give money as well as respect in the society. Well think again, ever heard of Virat Kohli or Kapil Sharma or Sunil Chetri or Arijit Singh? These are the people from various fields who have shined and earned respect as well as money in their lives. Think about where they would have been if not in the field of their talent and interest. Life is not a race to be ended but an opportunity to be scaled.

IITs are great institute for engineering, yes there are packages of Lakhs and Crores of money but this money is nothing compared to happiness of the children and the joy of their lives. Smile comes first money and everything else comes next. Let children decide their streams, let children explore their interests, let children fulfill their dreams. Parents don't put burden of your dreams and expectation on such young and precious minds. Let these young minds explore, set them free and aid them wherever necessary and they will shine in their own field on their own for sure.
